Kanyakumari Beach

Often referred as the 'Land's End' of India, Kanyakumari is the southern most tip of Indian mainland. Bay of Bengal confluences with Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea here. Beach of Kanyakumari has some unique attractions attached to it including Chaitrapurnima which is the Tamil name for all full moon day, generally falling in April. You can enjoy the unique experience of seeing the sunset on that particular day and the moon rise over the ocean simultaneously here. You will feel as the entire ocean is washed away with a shower of red-gold mist. Kanyakumari was so named because it is dedicated to the Hindu deity Kanya. Myth says that she was an incarnation of the Goddess Parvati who did a long penance to win Lord Shiva's hand in marriage but for some reason wasn't successful. She vowed that she would remain a virgin all her life.

Attractions Around Kanyakumari Beach

Its beaches are famous for the magnificent sunrises and mesmerizing sunsets especially on full moon days. You also would like to enjoy its vast stretches of paddy fields, rich forests, coconut groves and mineral sands. Beach of Kanyakumari has an overwhelming sight with the sand playing with the colours of the sky. This beach usually doesn't offer one the opportunities to sunbathe on soft silver sands, either to frolic on the sands or waves. Seashore here is rocky and dangerous and a man-made wall runs along it. Visitors are usually warned to stay off the rocks and if someone moves out of bounds, he or she is quickly and severely admonished by police.

Vivekananda's rock, a huge stone rising out of the sea, is the famous attraction here. Famous Indian saint and philosopher - Swami Vivekananda - is said to have meditated here. It now houses his statue and a memorial built for him. There is a lighthouse from where you can relish a panoramic view. It's really entertaining to watch the sea beating itself against the rocks and then subside, before it gathers itself up for another attack. The beach welcomes you to capture the waves of change with long stretches of multi-colour sand. A spectrum of shells is also on the sale here.

Best Time To Visit

Kanyakumari experiences a pleasant climate as it's very close to the sea. It can be visited throughout the year. But October and March is the the most enjoyable season to visit the place. The temperature can elevate up to a high of 34.8 ºC during summers, while it can dip to a low of 20.4 ºC during winters.

Where To Eat

Classic South-Indian type without Rotis (pan cake made from wheat) are the main meals available at Kanyakumari. North-Indian delicacies are available in some Rajastani/Punjabi style restaurants.

How To Reach

Kanyakumari's nearest airport is at Trivandrum (80 km) well connected with other major air heads by national and international flights. You can take a taxi or bus to Kanyakumari there onwards. Kanyakumari is also connected by train services with other cities in India. Regular bus services are available with Pondicherry, Bangalore, Chennai, Trichy, Tuticorin, Tiruchendur,Madurai, Mandapam (Rameshwaram), Nagercoil, Tiruvelveli and Trivandrum etc.

Where To Stay

Varying from reasonable economic class to luxurious ones are available are in Kanyakumari. As it may be difficult to find a room on a short notice, advance booking is advised. November to January and April/May is the high season. Rooms are also rented out for 24 hours.
