State Overview

Andman Island Andaman & Nicobar islands are located away from the Indian sub-continent in the Bay of Bengal. The enchanting archipelago of islands have been known to house aboriginal tribes since the ancient times. The first settlement of the British took place here during the year 1789, which was abandoned just a few years after in 1796. Later during 1858, following the first war of Indian independence, the place was made into a penal settlement for convicts, criminals and freedom fighters. Today, Andaman & Nicobar islands are known for their extreme natural beauty and providing immense opportunities of fun and leisure for the tourists.

How to Reach Andaman & Nicobar

» By Air : Port Blair, the capital of Andaman & Nicobar, is conveniently connected to Chennai and Calcutta by air. Indian Airlines and other private carriers such as Alliance Air and Jet Airways provide regular services to and from the place.

Note : Private charter flights can also be given landing permissions at Port Blair but with the prior approval of the Director General of Civil Aviation.

» By Sea : Regular ships are available between Port Blair and Chennai, Calcutta and Vishakhapatnam. Ships sail three to four times every month from Calcutta and Chennai to Port Blair and back. Vishakhapatnam is also connected once in a month. The journey takes around 50 to 60 hours to complete.

» Stop 1 : Cellular Jail
Cellular Jail - Andman Situated in the capital Port Blair, Cellular Jail stands as testament to the numerous tortures meted out by the ruling British on the Indian freedom fighters. Named cellular for its numerous cell like captivation chambers made to ensure solitary confinement, the jail was completed in the year 1906.

» Stop 2 : Harminder Bay Beach
Located 100 km from Port Blair, the beautiful beaches of Harminder Bay are situated at Hut Bay Island. The islands are connected with Port Blair through Inter Islands shipping services.

Day Two
» Stop 1 : Ross Island
The erstwhile capital of the British, Ross island is a small island which houses numerous ruins of old buildings constructed centuries ago during the British rule. The island is open for visitors during the day time and can be accessed via the boat jetty from Phoenix bay. The 'Smritika' museum located on the beach depicts the history of the island.

Day Three
» Stop 1 : Viper Island
Viper is another beautiful island, a witness to the brutalities carried out on Indian freedom fighters by British soldiers during the colonial times. A museum here displays numerous artifacts belonging to the colonial era.


Shopping in Andaman & Nicobar

Although Andaman & Nicobar islands are more famous for offering thrilling adventure sports opportunities, shopping here can be fun too. The main shopping area is located in Port Blair where you can buy multi hued coral and seashell souvenirs. Amongst other major buys are palm mats, coconut shell lamp shade, woodcrafts likefurniture and walking sticks as well as nicobaree mats.
