Chitrakote Falls, Chhattisgarh The new sprung twenty sixth state of India, Chhattisgarh has march past several other states in just few years of its constitution. Having an area of 1,35,000 sq kms, 12% of which is India's veritable forestland, the name Chhattisgarh was coined after 36 forts that it was formed of. Profused with green locales, streams,lakes, valleys, Chhattisgarh lives dynamically to its bestowed epithet of -Herbal State. Endowed exceptionally with the richness of natural resources, Chhattisgarh has recently tapped its eco-tourism potential. It is its rich tribal culture, wildlife, caves, waterfalls and untrained nature that has opened a vent for tourist world over. Its intoxicatingly rich history can be traced back to the Mahabharata era of Indian History. The state of Chhattisgarh is steeped deep in a rebellious history of tribes who casted a salient impact during 18th to 20th century. Of all the historical legends related to the state, the most important one is related to the name of state. It is believed that the name Chhattisgarh was transformed from the original name 'Chhattisghar'.

» Airways : Chhattisgarh has a domestic airport, which links to major cities of India. The flight services are provided by Indian Airline from its base in Raipur.

» Roadways : Linked to other states with an excellent network of the roads, Chhattisgarh lies on NH 6, 16 and 43. Apart from the National Highways the condition of the road might suffer in the internal parts of state. State Tourist buses ply between one state to another.

» Railways : There are two major railway station in the state viz. Raipur and Bilaspur that connect to the major railway stations in India. Since Raipur comes almost in the middle point between Mumbai and Howrah, two most important railway stations in west and east India respectively, it is served by important trains regularly.

» Attraction 1 : Chitrakote Falls
Palace - Kawardha, ChhattisgarhThe Chitrakote Falls are as wide asunder as one river end to another. Known to be a 'mini Niagara' in India, the Chitrakote beauty is mesmerising in every aspect, and differs with the American landmark in just one aspect; it is obscure from the world. With its behemothic horseshoe configuration and dramatic arc, the Chitrakote falls are formed by interesting incident. Indravati, a confluent of Godavari, forms a frothy between the rocks, snapping the roaring beauty miraculously at Chitrakote, a town that is 40 kms from Jagdalpur. Abutting the broad river base, Chitrakote is ringed by the falls' horsehoe, giving it a virtual look of lake. Of course the abyss is abuzz with activities; boatride; fishing. The Chitrakote Fall is the biggest in India and that remains deterrent in snapping it.

» Attraction 2 : Kawardha
A mini town in Chhattisgarh, Kawardha spells a calm serenity and lend-leases a unmatched beauty to the state, at just 140 kms from Raipur. The beauty here is still enhanced by the rich tribal life and breathtaking greenery, offered in abundance. The prime attraction of Kawardha is the 20th century palace built with Italian marble stone on a lush base of 11 acres.

The architectural design of the palace is a fine blend of Italian, Mughal and Colonial styles, making it an interesting attraction worth visiting in the region.

» Attraction 3 : Kanker
Kanker's existence proves the antiquity of Chhattisgarh, otherwise, how many states in India have preserved a 1000 years old town. Kanker is one such town in Chhattisgarh. It poses a striking combination of tribal culture, waterfalls and forests with an enchanting surrounding of exquisite valleys. The royal palace of Kanker is an exceptional architectural attraction famed for its medieval appeal. The palace is adorned with a fine brilliance of royal suites, adding a contemporary touch. The incredibly keen and friendly royal family members arrange interesting and exciting excursions to explore the enchanting scenic beauty as well as the tribal heritage of the region. You can also enjoy a nature walk to surrounding farms and lush green hills. You can also visit the potters and bell-metal makers at Kondagaon in Bastar. » Attraction 4 : Bhoramdeo
The sculptures and temples of Bhoramdeo zaps the viewers with an instant relation to the Khajuraho. Yes of course, Bhoramdeo, with its treasure of temples, wildlife and artistic display of edifices remains the major attraction here.

» Attraction 5 : Bastar
Bastar Palace, ChhattisgarhAn important district of Chhattisgarh, Bastar is covered under the carpet of green forest of bamboo, sal and teak. And the mention of waterfalls here can't take a backseat. The Ganga Munda and Dalpat Sagar lakes are situated on the river Indravati, which passes through Jagdalpur. Simplicity lived, you can walk right off the street and into the 70 year old Bastar palace, situated at one end of the main street. The erstwhile Royal Family still resides in one part, while another is being used as a medical college. Currently, there are no residential facilities here, but lunch can be arranged. There is a weekly haat (market) here on Sundays.

» Attraction 6 : Barsur
It is difficult to spot Barsur on the map. Tucked away in the corner of Barsur's heritage is a visual treat for lovers of architecture. If you happen to go there on saturday you might be fortunate enough to catch a cock -fight and salfi (an alcoholic drink), next to 'Market Temple'. The narrow haat road leads to other attractions of Barsur, the most interesting one being the open-air twin Ganesha sculptures. The Mama Bhanja Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. With its tall shikaras, it is reminiscent of Bhoramdeo Temple in north. Another temple called as Batissa temple is a flat and pillared structured with two inner sanctums. The village is surrounded by well maintained monuments and beautiful mud houses.

» Attraction 7 : Dongargarh
A small hilltop temple in Chhattisgarh's Rajnandgaon district, it is situated on the Mumbai-Howrah railway line. The temple, tough quiet unimpressive, houses the very powerful goddess, Bambleshwar Devi. A huge fair is held in Dongargarh during the navaratris. The temple is perched atop a small hillhock at a height of 1600 fts and is surrounded by smaller rocky outcrops. A thirty ft-tall statue of Buddha is maintained by Indo-Japan Buddhist Society of India. Half of the fun visiting Dongargarh is visiting is binded in its rope way.

» Attraction 8 : Jagdalpur
A district headquarter of Bastar is well spread out town littered with large government buildings. Ringed by waterfalls and lakes, Jagdalpur has the best and largest haat in Chhattisgarh.

» Attraction 9 : Kutumsar
The amazing stone formation make Kutumsar a must visit. It is a strange cave in Chhattisgarh 300 mts long and 72 mts below ground level.

» Attraction 10 : Pali
People, JagdalpurPali is a small village on the Korba-Bilaspur road, to the north-east of Ratanpur. The historic Shiva temple at Pali, standing next to large lake, is a 12th century construction. Chhattisgarh's temple heritage is mind boggling, with Pali literally representing the tip of the iceberg. Tribal culture, ghotul, and haats just happen to entice the tourists on their own.


Shopping Places

There is never any boring moment at the local market in Chhattisgarh. The markets are known as haats where you can sample the potent brew, buy silver jewellery, get a tatoo or even bet on a cockfight. The haats of Bastar are exuberant microcosm of the region's waning tribal heritage. The best n place to buy handicrafts are the local markets, that give you choice on the ways of spoiling yourself. Purchase bell metal items, terracota and wrought and loads of cotton fabrics. There are number of government shops and emporias where you can choose to buy the products.
