State Overview

Located towards the extreme south of the north eastern region of India,
Mizoram is a finger like projection bordered by the countries of Myanmar and
Bangladesh on each of its sides. Predominantly a Christian populated state,
Mizoram was declared the 23rd state of India in 1987. The hills rise to an
average of 900 meters while the lush forests are rich in a wide variety of
flora and fauna. The climate in this part of the world remains pleasant and
hovers between 10 to 20º during winters and remains between 20 and 30º
during summers.

How to
Reach Mizoram
» By Air : The only airport of the state is located
in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. Aizawl airport is connected by regular
flights to Guwahati and Kolkata. An Indian Airlines flight flies daily
between Guwahati and Aizawl which departs from Guwahati at 1225 and arrives
Aizawl at 1325. Another daily Indian Airlines flight between Kolkata and
Aizawl leaves Kolkata at 1100 hrs.
» By Rail : Mizoram does not have any rail
connections. The nearest railhead is Silchar in Assam which is connected to
other parts in India through a number of regular trains. From Silchar buses
and taxis are easily available to reach Mizoram.
» By Road : An extensive network of well built
roads runs through the north eastern region and connects Mizoram with other
neighbouring states. State transport operates regular buses within and
outside the state. Private taxis are also available for hire.

Day One : Aizwal

Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram is located at an altitude of 4000 feet above
sea level. The city is easily connected to other neighbouring cities in
Assam and Meghalaya and therefore serves as the starting point for most of
the travellers coming to Mizoram.
» Stop 1 : Tamdil Lake
Located near Saitaul village, a short distance from Aizawl, Tamdil Lake is
an ideal picnic spot located amidst cool, lush forests. Paddle and rowboat
facilities are available for the tourists while the nearby tourist lodge
provides accommodation facilities.
» Stop 2 : Bara Bazaar
It is the ideal place for people who love shopping. Shops and stalls here
sell everything from daily use commodities to souvenirs. The place is also
ideal for spotting localites in their colorful traditional costumes.
» Stop 3 : Bung
This is a picturesque picnic spot, located just 15 km from Aizawl. Bung can
be reached by local buses or private taxis which are available for hire at
various points in the city.
Day Two : Champhai
Champhai is a border town in Mizoram and owing to its location serves as a
business corridor between India and Myanmar. Besides its strategic
importance, the place is also a major tourist magnet with its numerous
tourist attractions and immense natural beauty.

Mizos are skilled weavers and craftsmen which make handicrafts items the
main produce of the state. Besides traditional clothes other must buys in
Mizoram include items made of bamboo such as utensils, flower vases, baskets
and furniture. Though there are no big shopping malls in the state, there
