About Manas National
Park


The Manas Wildlife Sanctuary is an unending sweep of lowly sal forests and
grasslands. Manas comprises of Kokrjhar and Barpeta districts while its
outlying settlements of extend to forest reserve division of North Kamrup,
Western Assam Wildlife Division. To its north lies Manas National Park in
Bhutan. Manas was crested with the designation of Wildlife Sanctuary way
back in 1928 and sixty three years later it was again declared as World
Heritage Site in Danger, it was only in 1990 it was declared as a National
Park. Manas Wildlife Sanctuary qualifies an additional attribute of being an
excellent Wildlife Parks and that's Manas is only tiger reserve in Assam.
Manas Wildlife Sanctuary is the second largest tiger population and best
maintained parks in India with a special Biosphere sheltering 20 species of
birds and animals. Reptiles include different species of snakes and the
monitor lizards. The Assam roofed turtle was spotted at the Manas Wildlife
Sanctuary as recently as 1989.
Fauna : hispid hare, pigmy hog and golden langur,
tigers, elephants, rhinoceros, wild buffalo, wild boar, sambhar, swamp deer,
and hog deer, elephants, rhinos, swamp deer, gaur, and more elusive species,
such as the clouded leopard, golden cat, pangolin, fishing cat, pygmy hog
and leopard.
Avifauna : Over 450 species of birds like Riverchats,
forktails, cormorants and ducks, ruddy shell-duck, hornbill and pied
hornbill are found in the park.

Manas
Wildlife Sanctuary offers boat rides and elephant rides. The best way to
spot animals are elephant rides as it is only 4x4 live vehicle to meander in
the darkness of jungles. The starting point of elephant safaris is
Mothanguri and goes on for 3 hours. Another option to explore the untrampled
trail of jungle are boats where spotting birds and beasts become easy.
Amazingly, there is no forest authority available inside the park and jeeps
can be hired from Bansbari Range.
» Halt 2 : Fishing
Manas has a treasure trove of secret trails where you can trek to find out
secret species in the heart land of sanctuary. The forest stretches beyond
Indian territory conquering some part of Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan with
water of Manas River demarcating its international border. Finding paseo
inside the forest is difficult because the forest is dense preventing the
sun rays inside the forest .
